My Entrepreneurship Journey

As the saying goes: “Third time’s the charm!”

Welcome to my long, thought-about entrepreneurial venture: SAE Consulting Group, LLC, a management consulting firm working to advance sustainable solutions for building an equitable, inclusive, and just world.

SAE Consulting Group provides services across five areas: Career Coaching, Change Management, Philanthropic Advising, Political Strategy, and Speaking Engagements. In partnership with my consulting clients, I hope to create an inclusive cross-sector learning community where allyship is deepened, and systemic approaches to achieving economic, gender, and racial equity and justice are pursued.

The Beginning of My Journey

I first conceived of this firm in 1996 after giving birth to my third child and third daughter. I wanted to find a more flexible way of working on social justice causes while being available for my growing family. Like many others then and now, I was seeking the ever-elusive work-life balance.

SAE are my daughters’ initials. (Yes, all three have the same initials!)  I created this firm in their honor. For me, raising three black girls into adulthood meant working to improve the socio-economic conditions of the present while strengthening and increasing opportunities for an inclusive and just world tomorrow. As immigrants, their father and I recognized the unique challenges of raising children in a country where the culture was foreign to us. We both came from Jamaica but met in the United States. Choosing to raise our daughters here was daunting, to say the least.

Choosing Full-Time Employment

With the competing demands of building a family and starting a business in 1996, I soon realized that I did not want to put my children through the uncertainties of entrepreneurship. Fortunately, with a master’s degree and a spouse who shared work and family responsibilities equally, I had the flexibility to return to full-time employment.

For the next 21 years, between 1996 and 2017, I had the tremendous opportunity to build a career combating economic, gender, and racial inequities in various leadership positions in the nonprofit, for-profit, and philanthropic sectors.

The Job Opportunity I Could Not Refuse

Then, in 2017, I made my second attempt at launching my firm. However, after creating the LLC, I secured a job opportunity I could not refuse— leading NYC’s Commission on Gender Equity. For six years, I directed the city’s efforts to eliminate gender discrimination and implement gender equitable policies and practices so that NYC could become the city where all its citizens, regardless of gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or background, could thrive.

I left public service in July 2023 eager to continue the fight for equity and justice as an entrepreneur. I bring six decades of life experience to this venture, including two decades in my home country, four decades as an immigrant and naturalized citizen in the United States, and three decades of cross-sector professional experience.

The Next Phase

With SAE Consulting Group, LLC, I aim to work with individuals and institutions through research, strategy development, and action plan implementation to create environments where all people can actively contribute to building multi-cultural, multi-generational, and gender-inclusive democracies in the United States and throughout the world.
